Lagos Airport Debuts Frequent Suspect Program for Repeat International Arrests
Officials say the new bronze-silver-gold tier system will streamline paperwork for travelers who are detained more than once on the same set of allegations.
Following the high-profile arrest of a man authorities describe as a Mexican drug kingpin, the airport's newly formed Frequent Suspect Program has begun issuing membership cards to detainees who meet its qualifying criteria, which include being wanted in more than one country and denying the same charge at least twice.
Under the program, a Bronze-tier suspect receives expedited fingerprinting, while Silver unlocks a dedicated holding lounge with complimentary bottled water. Gold-tier members, reserved for individuals detained on arrival for the second time at the same terminal, are said to receive a laminated luggage tag reading 'Valued Repeat Guest.'
'We noticed the same names kept appearing on our watch list, so we thought, why not make the process pleasant for everyone involved,' said a representative of the program, who declined to give a name but wore a lanyard identifying them as 'Loyalty Coordinator.'
The representative added that enrollment is entirely optional, though anyone who denies the underlying allegations twice is automatically upgraded regardless of preference. A brochure for the program reportedly includes a loyalty punch card, with a free espresso promised after the fifth international detainment.
Critics have questioned whether the program undermines the seriousness of the arrests, to which the Loyalty Coordinator reportedly replied that seriousness and customer satisfaction are not mutually exclusive.
