Katmai Bears Now Subject to Draft Combine, Seeding Committee Ahead of Fat Bear Week
With the field expanding to 16, park officials say the salmon-eating tournament needed the same bureaucratic machinery as any major league.
Katmai National Park has confirmed that this year's Fat Bear Week will be preceded by a multi-day scouting combine, in which each bear's fishing form, nap efficiency, and girth trajectory will be evaluated by a panel before bracket seeding begins.
"We simply couldn't seed sixteen bears off vibes alone anymore," said a park spokesperson, adjusting a clipboard while a bear napped visibly behind them. "The committee needed something to point at."
The seeding committee, formed specifically for this expanded field, has reportedly spent most of its first week debating whether a bear's willingness to share a fishing spot should count for or against it in the standings.
A separate subcommittee has been convened to handle the draft itself, though so far its only accomplishment has been agreeing on a date for the next meeting to discuss draft order.
Officials maintain the changes are purely procedural and will not affect the bears, who continue to eat salmon and gain weight without any apparent awareness that they have been seeded.
