Pricing Expert's Secret Fifth Tip: Just Stop Using Money
After four legitimate strategies for dodging sneaky price hikes, one expert admits the only foolproof method left is opting out of currency entirely.
A pricing consultant who built a career teaching shoppers to spot dynamic pricing, drip fees and personalized markups says the four standard tips — comparison shopping, clearing cookies, buying off-season and reading the fine print — only slow the bleeding.
"Those are stopgaps," the consultant reportedly told a small workshop audience. "If you really want to beat the algorithm, you have to leave the system the algorithm lives in."
The fifth step, delivered almost as an aside, involves trading services directly with neighbors: eggs for lawn mowing, spare firewood for tax advice, homemade bread for whatever a plumber will accept in lieu of an invoice. Attendees were reportedly encouraged to draft simple handwritten ledgers instead of using apps, on the grounds that any app eventually finds a way to price the ledger itself.
Skeptics in the workshop asked how this scales to rent or groceries. The consultant allegedly answered that scaling was "exactly the kind of thinking that got us into surge pricing in the first place," before recommending everyone start smaller, perhaps by bartering haircuts.
By the end of the session, several attendees were reportedly comparing notes on how many jars of pickles a used bicycle might be worth, while one holdout insisted on paying for parking with an app that had, notably, just raised its rate.
